Are you eligible to make a reservation under an economically weaker section quota?
Whether or not you are considered financially weak depends on your family's income and wealth.
The following are the criteria laid down by the Central Government for determining eligibility for EWS. To be classified under EWS, you must meet all of the criteria listed below.
1. Are you in the General category?
The 10% EWS reservation quota will be given to general category candidates only. Other class aspirants already have reservation benefits - OBC (27%), SC (15%), and ST (7.5%).
2. Your family income is Rs. 8 lakhs?
EWS shall be recognized for the benefit of reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Communities who are not covered by the Reservation Scheme and whose family gross annual income is Rs.8 Lakhs (Rs.8 Lakhs only).
Income from all sources, such as salary, agriculture, business, occupation, etc., is also included in the fiscal year before the application year.
3. Does your family have less than 5 acres of farm land?
To classify under the EWS, your family may or may not own 5 acres of farmland.
4. Does your family have a residential flat of less than 1000 square feet?
To classify under EWS, your family must not have a residential flat of 1000 square feet or more.
5. Does your family own less than 100 square yards (in notified municipalities)?
To classify under the EWS, your family may or may not have 100 square yards or more of dwelling space in notified municipalities.
You will notice that 100 square yards equals 900 square feet or 2 cents (approx.).
6. Does your family own less than 200 square yards (other than notified municipalities)?
To classify under the EWS, your family may or may not own or occupy 200 square yards or more in areas other than notified municipalities.
You may notice that 200 square yards equals 1800 square feet or 4 cents (approx.).
EWS Reservation Eligibility - Is the standard the same for all states in India?
The above standards are given by the central government.
States in India can reduce their income to determine who is EWS and may even exceed the income criteria set by the Center.

You must obtain an "Income and Property Certificate" from the relevant government authority (eg: Tahsildar).

Do candidates get additional benefits under the EWS (eg: age relaxation, number of attempts, etc.)?
Although such an offer was initially made, no such exemption has yet been allowed.
Candidates who fall under the Economically Weaker section (EWS) will get only 10% reservation quota. There is no age limit or relaxation relative to the number of attempts. This is similar to the candidates in Open-Merit (General).
Difference between EWS reservation and OBC reservation
Non-creamy layer candidates in other Backward Communities (OBCs) will be given 27% reservation. However, only 10% reservation is allowed for economically weaker sections of the general category candidates.
Furthermore, in addition to quota, relaxation in the age limit, number of opportunities and cut-off marks are available for OBC, SC and ST. So far no relaxation has been given to the efforts of candidates in the general category or the financially impaired. There may be a special cut-off for the EWS quota - along the same lines as the OBC, SC and ST.
In determining the income of the OBC candidates, the income of the candidate or her husband is not included. However, the definition of family for the EWS quota is different. This includes the candidate and his spouse.
