If you are a complete beginner, it is advisable to cover all matters for Prelims and Mains 10-12 months before Prelims. This means that if you are planning to attend Prelims 2020 (on June 2020), the recommended time to start preparations is June - August 2020.

However, there are a large number of candidates who can successfully complete the IAS test with 5-6 months (or less) months of preparation. So the main thing here is not the quantity of time, but the quality of the time.

Candidates must associate the mains preparation with the basic preparation as you do not have enough time to cover all mains topics after the prelims (3.5 months only). For effective, fast and centralized preparation, candidates are advised to take the Prelims Mock Test Series 2020 according to the timetable.

Ideally, you should take at least 1 mock exam each week - covering the topics you studied the week before. This will help you cover almost all prelims topics and many overlapping topics for men.

Parallel to this you need to study additional subjects such as Ethics, World History, India from Independence, Indian Society, Internal Security etc - these are the main test (written) in addition to the prelims syllabus.
